PAGET'S DISEASE OF THE BONE.

Even if the man reaches his full height, bones do not stop growing. A continuous process, called remodeling, is being carried on by which old bones are removed and new ones are replaced. This is because of the fact the bones are living tissues. Paget’s disease disturbs this process of remodeling.

Named after an English surgeon, Sir James Paget, who firstly identified it, this disease affects mostly elderly persons. When affected with this disease, old bones start to break down more before the new bones could be built up, and in response the body begins to generate new bones at a greater speed than the normal; and thus producing bones that are soft and weak This in turn, leads to bone pain, deformities and fractures.

Usually, this disease affects the skull, the spine, arms, legs and pelvis; but one or more than one area of the body may become its victim. People affected by this disease may not have any symptom and need no treatment but a close and regular monitoring is only needed. If signs of this disease have become troublesome; treatment can be given with medicines or by surgery.
